Well, this is terrifying…

…and, yanno, not so far off if net neutrality isn’t fixed ASAP.

Nerd Rant

This article from Radar pretty well sums up the problem I have with the iPad, and why, despite being a pretty devoted Apple-phile in the past, probably won’t be buying one anytime soon.  It’s not that it’s not a nifty product, it just isn’t worth it.

“You aren’t buying a computer when you buy an iPad, you are buying a 16GB Walmart store shelf that fits on your lap – complete with all the supplier beat downs, slotting fees, and exclusive deals that go with it – and Apple got you to pay for the building.”

The Joys of Living in Sin SoCal

Oh it’s so true.  Californians are just about as blase as people can get about earthquakes.

If you somehow managed to miss the news, we caught part of an earthquake here today.  It was quite big, but here in the OC it was a rolling quake, they don’t tend to do that much damage, since the motion is smooth they’re quite gentle as far as earthquakes go…

Unless of course they’re very, very big.  Our ground here is a layer of dirt over a base of mostly sand, and a big rolling quake will cause that sand to act like a liquid, and that, my friends, causes buildings to literally sink into the ground.  Awesome!  …or not.

Sean Flynn

So it looks like Sean Flynn’s remains have finally been found in Cambodia.  The official results aren’t in yet, they’re going to be comparing his dental records to the remains, but the circumstantial evidence is pretty strong, and it sounds like he met a very unpleasant end.  It’s not happy news, but I’m sure the Flynns are glad for the closure.

“I expect of you your supreme efforts.”

The set from Cecil B. DeMille’s Ten Commandments still exists — it’s half-lost under the sand up in Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes.  Apparently he couldn’t take it with him, but he didn’t want anyone else to use it, and so when filming was finished, he had it buried.  There’s one guy who’s been trying to excavate it for the last twenty-five years or so, and even though he’s had quite a lot of interest, he’s never been able to raise the money.  Oh, lost causes.  <3

No personality, you say?

While many cephalopods show personality, octopus, despite their alarming intelligence, are just plain moody.  End result?  We no longer need to feel guilty about nomming smart sushi!  (Dolphins are still off-limits.)

Save Hollywoodland!

It’s not commonly known that the Hollywood sign is on private property — but it is, and that land is due to be sold.  The Trust for Public Land is trying to buy it, but they need to raise a good deal of money in a very short amount of time.  We’re all a bit short on cash at the moment, but you can join up on their Facebook or Twitter pages for free, and help spread the word!
