The call for entries at the San Diego Comic Con arrived in my mailbox today, and the entry price was so cheap that I really could not justify not buying a bit of space. So, uh, guess who’s going to be exhibiting in the artists’ area at SDCC ’10?

Keeping up with the Joneses?

Went to a screening of “My Name is Jerry” this evening, which is great by the way. It’s well made, has a very sweet story, and is really just a cute little film all around. It’s on the festival circuit right now, and should be coming out on DVD soon. I totally recommend it.
While I was there I caught up with the always awesome Doug Jones, who was there with family, including his fantastic niece Jessie… and yes, they really are that tall. (I’m 5’1.)
It was an excellent night. I always enjoy going to screenings of Doug’s latest films, because the people who show up all tend to be friends and fans of his, and somehow he just attracts wonderful people. Even better, he’s great about introducing everyone, so you’re never at a loss for someone interesting to chat with — I usually end up hanging around for hours after!
Anyway, home now, and to bed soon, methinks, before I turn into a pumpkin…
To all my snowbound friends…
I’ve been spending mornings on my lovely fourth floor balcony, drinking coffee and lounging in the sun. SoCal is currently enjoying highs around 70F and lows of about 45F, with clear blue skies and a light ocean breeze day after day… We’re currently accepting applications from winter refugees. My apartment’s small, but I have a very comfy couch, JSYK.

Stardust…
The travel plan of NASA’s Stardust sounds like a Buck Rogers adventure. Swing far past Mars to within 150 miles of Comet Wild 2, which streaks by at 13,700 miles per hour. Catch fragments without destroying them. Travel back to Earth and drop a capsule into the atmosphere for a blazing nighttime re-entry over Utah. Parachute to the ground without crashing. “We were scared up to the last second,” Zolensky says. “We still can’t believe it really worked.” …from a nifty article on the Stardust mission over at Smithsonian.com.
It’s ridiculous, for something like five years now I’ve had a friend who’s a navigator for NASA JPL in Pasadena, and I’ve wanted to visit NASA since I was a kid, but I never asked him for a tour. I’d always just assumed they were closed to the public like all the private contractors…
When I first moved to LA, my best friend here worked (still does) at TRW/Northrop Grumman, and — aside from an interview with a very nice man from the Air Force who didn’t much fancy my dragging one of their top security clearance engineers off to *gasp* France — all I got out of it was a stack of mission patches, and a 2″ x 2″ piece of crumpled gold insulation foil.
So, I’d contented myself with the Northrop visitors day, which consists of candy floss and carnival games in the parking lot. Even living with an engineer and going to company parties, the parking lot is all I’ve seen of Northrop in nearly ten years. Well, unless you count shopping at the Fry’s Electronics that took over their adjunct offices a few years ago. (Irony!)
…anyway, I mentioned this to my JPL friend, and he pointed out that they have tours daily.
/facepalm.
